About Cirque du Work

The Place for Writers and the Graduate English Department at Mills College invite you to:

Cirque du Work!
Annual Professional Development Conference on Writing, Publishing, Teaching, and “Day Jobs” for Writers and Scholars
Friday March 15th – Saturday March 16th 2013
Mills College, 5000 MacArthur Blvd, Oakland, 94613

Friday, March 15

Current graduate students and alum of the MFA and MA programs at Mills College will have the opportunity to participate in a “bootcamp” led by faculty. Morning workshops will focus on CV-building, creating teaching statements, and writing letters of intent. In the afternoon, faculty will lead mock interviews for jobs in composition, literature, and creative writing classrooms, providing students the chance to practice their interview skills. See the Friday’s schedule here for more information and to sign up for an interview slot. Events on this day are open to Mills MA in Literature and MFA in Creative Writing students only.

Saturday, March 16

Panels on Saturday are FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC including Mills students, students from other campuses, independent writers, and the wider Bay Area community. Saturday panels will address how to navigate the publishing world, the writing and non-writing related job market, community work, and traditional and nontraditional teaching. Speakers feature Mills College alums in conversation with local writers, editors, agents, teachers, and artists. During the afternoon panels, current Mills students and alum are also invited to sign up for a one-on-one appointment with a literary agent to practice pitching their fiction or nonfiction projects. If you are a student or alum, send your request to meet with an agent (include the genre of your writing) to Darin Jensen, djensen@mills.edu, and he will respond with details about the agent you will meet with, your meeting time and any information the agent wants you to have before the meeting.

Check here for Panel Descriptions.

Lunch is provided on Saturday (free of charge), but we do ask that you RSVP here so we know how many to expect.

Everyone is invited to stay for an informal mixer at 5:15pm following the last panel. (No RSVP required for mixing!)
